Starting at Barra Lighthouse, which marks the entrance to
“Baía de Todos os Santos” (All Saint’s Bay), you continue on
to visit Barra Port, the Carlos Costa Pinto Museum, Castro
Alves Theatre and Castro Alves Square, Sé Square, the
“Terreiro de Jesus” (Jesus’ Yard) and “Pelourinho” (the
colonial whipping post square). Here you will visit many of
Salvador’s famous churches, among them Basilica Cathedral, the
Church of the Third Order of St. Francisco and Our Lady of the
Rosary for the Negroes Church. All tours terminate back at

Starting at Barra
Lighthouse, which marks the entrance to “Baía de Todos os
Santos” (All Saint’s Bay), this tour visits the recently
redesigned Tororó Dyke with it’s beautiful Orixás statues,
fountains and parks. The tour continues on to “Fonte Nova”
Stadium, the Church of Our Lady of the Seas, descends Fernandes
de Cunha Ribeiro Avenue to the Church of Our Lady of Piety, and
the Church of Bonfim and Monserrat Fort. A final stop at the
vibrant Mercado Modelo Market for souvenir shopping and fun
bartering over Bahia’s famous hand-made lace, embroidery,
hammocks, hand-carved wooden items, semi-precious stones and
jewelry, musical instruments and more, and it’s back to your
hotel.

This tour takes
an interesting route to arrive at it’s destination, Morro de São
Paulo (St. Paul’s Mount), situated at the extreme north of
Tinharé Island. You will cross the 13 km of Baía de Todos os
Santos by ferry boat to arrive at Bom Despacho Port on the
Island of Itaparica. Continuing on by bus to Funnel Bridge, the
bridge which connects the island to the continent, you arrive at
Valença. Here you will launch off by boat to Morro de São Paulo,
whereupon you will have a pleasant walk along the beach to 4th
Beach, your final destination. You will lunch and spend the day
on this pristine beach, where horseback rides are optional. Tour

follows the coast north along the famous Coconut Highway to the
breathtaking Guarajuba Beach. After a stop to swim in it’s tepid
waters, the tour continues north to Fort Beach, a picturesque

6 - SET SAIL BY SCHOONER

Taken from your
hotel to the docks, you will set sail in a schooner, fully
equipped for your comfort with a cocktail bar, music and guide.
From off the water, you will see St. Marcelo Fort, Salvador’s
lower city’s commerce area with it’s outline of the upper city
above, and Itapagipe Pennisula. Sailing on to Frades Island and
Itaparica Island, you will stop to dive, swim and snorkel at
each. Lunch is optional. Tour terminates back at your hotel. |

116 km from
Salvador, the quaint historical city of Cachoeira (Waterfall) is
situated in an agricultural region along the coastline of the
Bay, known as the Reconcavo. This tour provides the chance for
you to see rural Bahia, with it’s cocoa, sugar cane, manioc root
and tobacco plantations. Depending on the day of the week, you
will discover local producers’ markets in St. Amaro or
Cachoeira. You may visit the numerous colonial monastaries and
churches Cachoeira has to offer, and lunch at the Convent of St.
Carmo. En route returning to Salvador, you stop in São Gonçalo
dos Campos to visit the Menedez and Amerino cigar factory. Tour
terminates back at your hotel.

is a region of spectacular natural beauty, formed by mountains
and crystal clear waters with magnificent waterfalls pouring

caves (with entrances of up to 200 meters high) as well as trek

+ 9 - BAHIA’S CANDOMBLÉ HOUSES
|
|

|
You will visit
some of Bahia’s oldest, most traditional and most respected
Candomblé terreiros (houses), among them Ilé Axé Opô Afonjá,
Casa Branca and Terreiro Mãe Menininha do Gantois. Depending on
the time of year, you may participate in one of the many
nighttime celebrations, the culminating point of annual
ceremonies, which occur in an open house called the barracão.
These celebrations, performed with song and dance to the beat of
sacred drums, where the ancestral African divinities come to
dance and dance and dance are open to the public. Traditional
foods of the divinities may also be tasted. Or, you may wish to
visit the terreios during the day, and with a little luck (and a
monetary offering on your part) be received by the Ialorixá or
Babalorixá, the mãe-de-santo or pai-de-santo, (high priestess/priest)
for a reading from the cowry shell divination (jogo de búzios),
the African Orixá’s Oracle, by which the high priestess/priest
makes predictions, offers counsel, and most certainly will tell
you which African divinity guides you.
